THE PRAYERS OF GOD’S PEOPLE
Mindful of both the beauty and the brokenness of this world in which we live, we join the people of God in all times and places in praying for the church, the world, and all who are in need …. using the prayer refrain “Lord, in your mercy… hear our prayer.”
In a world where many would seek to damage your creation, to divide the human community and demean the lives of others … help us always to be grateful for the abundant gifts which you give, and to safeguard those gifts for the sake of our neighbors and the sake of future generations. Lord, in your mercy… hear our prayer.
In a world where the material threatens to overwhelm the spiritual; where goodness seems too frail in the face of badness; where selflessness is scarce and selfishness is all too common … help us not to give up on righteousness and faith … and make us bold to pray “Thy will be done.” Lord, in your mercy… hear our prayer.
In a world where we struggle to understand pain and suffering, and, most especially, in the lives of those we love … we bring before you those for whom we weep; those we embrace in our hearts; those to who we reach out in the yearnings of our prayers … Silence … Lord, in your mercy… hear our prayer.
In a world where so much is focused on the here and now … help us to remain bound with those who have gone before us; to rejoice in our fellowship in the one kingdom of your love; and to give thanks for those moments when we see glimpses of eternity and your coming Kingdom. Lord, in your mercy… hear our prayer.
For we ask these things in the name of the One who taught us all to pray:
Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
